I translated this song in 2019, but I can’t find the analysis I wrote then. I remember calling it one of BTS’s finest love ballads, a song where two people become light for each other, brightening lives once bright but later dimmed. That light revives their earliest dreams, restores breath, and brings the world into focus. What binds them isn’t the cliché of fate but the shock of recognition: “아픈 너의 눈빛이 나와 같은 곳을 보는 걸” (literally, “your pained gaze is looking at the same place as mine”). It’s a beautifully metaphorical way of saying, “let’s comfort each other in our shared grief.” I planned to write a new analysis, but reading the lyrics again, I’m reminded that RM and the BigHit team wrote lines so clear and lyrical they hardly need explanation.
Lyrics
Verse 1:
You’re a light that has brightened my life again,
Rekindling the dreams of my childhood.
These new sensations, I can’t quite place them.
Maybe this is part of my dream,
A dream like a green oasis in a desert.
You exist deep within me, a priori.
I am happy beyond words.
I can see everything around me more clearly.
Pre-Chorus:
I can hear the ocean in the distance.
Let’s go to that place beyond the forest,
Past the dream, where clarity appears.
Take my hand now.
You are the cause of my euphoria.
Chorus:
Euphoria.
Take my hands now.
You are the cause of my euphoria.
Euphoria.
Close the door now.
When I’m with you,
I’m in utopia.
Verse 2:
Did you, like me,
Wander in search of a dream erased?
This is not the cliché they call fate.
Your pained gaze is fixed on the very place mine is.
Won’t you please stay in dreams.
Pre-Chorus:
I can hear the ocean in the distance.
Let’s go to that place beyond the forest,
Past the dream, where clarity appears.
Take my hand now.
You are the cause of my euphoria.
Chorus:
Euphoria.
Take my hands now.
You are the cause of my euphoria.
Bridge:
Even if the sand beneath us breaks apart,
And someone rattles this world,
Hold fast to our clasped hands.
Please do not wake up from the dream.
