유럽 여행을 떠올리면 대부분 프랑스, 이탈리아, 영국, 체코, 그리스 같은 나라들을 먼저 생각한다. 그러나 조금 더 신비롭고, 여행객의 발길이 거의 닿지 않은 특별한 곳을 찾는다면 나는 스코틀랜드 하이랜드를 추천하고 싶다.

대학생 시절, 나는 이곳을 2주 동안 배낭여행한 적이 있다. 그 여행은 내게 너무나도 아름답고 신선한 경험이었다. 수백만 년의 침식으로 다듬어진 고대 암석들을 올려다보거나, 황야로 덮인 언덕 너머 끝없이 펼쳐지는 풍경을 바라볼 때마다 경이로움이 밀려왔다. 물론 하이랜드 여행은 결코 쉽지 않다. 인적이 드물고, 고도가 높아 공기는 차갑고 바람은 거세다. 비가 자주 내려 방수 재킷과 등산화, 그리고 여러 겹의 옷은 필수다. 하지만 모험을 사랑하는 이에게 하이랜드는 그 어떤 곳보다 매력적이다. 특히 스코틀랜드 위스키를 좋아한다면 더욱 그렇다.
하이랜드에서 가장 유명한 곳 중 하나는 케언곰스 국립공원(Cairngorms National Park)이다. 에든버러에서 차로 약 한 시간 반 거리에 있으며, 스코틀랜드의 가장 높은 산들, 고 엘리자베스 2세 여왕이 사랑한 여름 별장 밸모랄 성(Balmoral Castle), 그리고 스코틀랜드에서 가장 매력적인 호텔 중 하나로 꼽히는 더 파이프 암스(The Fife Arms)가 있다. 하이랜드는 위스키의 본고장인 만큼, 여러 바와 증류소에서 테이스팅을 즐길 수 있다. 그중에서도 풍미별로 위스키를 분류해 놓은 버티스 바(Bertie’s Bar)가 특히 유명하다.
스코틀랜드 하이랜드를 가로지르는 진정한 로드 트립이라면 전설적인 노스 코스트 500(North Coast 500) 코스를 빼놓을 수 없다. 멀고 외딴 길이지만, 그 여정에는 고대 유적과 역사적인 장소, 위스키 증류소, 해안 마을, 그리고 스코틀랜드에서 가장 장엄한 풍경들이 기다리고 있다. 가능하다면 로크 네스 롯지(Loch Ness Lodge)에서 하룻밤을 보내는 것도 좋다. 로크 네스 호수 바로 옆에 자리 잡고 있어, 전설의 괴물 네시를 볼 수도 있을지 모른다.^^
이 코스에서는 더니스 비치(Durness Beach), 스무 동굴(Smoo Cave), 상고 베이(Sango Bay), 샌드우드 베이(Sandwood Bay), 그리고 영국(연합왕국)에서 가장 높은 폭포인 이스 아 쿠알 아루인(Eas a’ Chual Aluinn) 같은 명소들을 만날 수 있다. 또한 글렌모랑지 증류소(Glenmorangie Distillery)에서 싱글 몰트 스카치를 맛보거나, 스코틀랜드 북동부 해안의 올드 풀트니(Old Pulteney) 증류소에서 바다 향이 스며든 위스키를 즐길 수도 있다.
또 하나의 선택지는 서해안과 인근 섬들을 따라가는 길이다. 어느 경로를 택하든, 하이랜드를 여행할 때 반드시 기억해야 할 것은 변덕스러운 날씨다. 방수 재킷, 방수 부츠, 그리고 여러 겹의 옷은 필수다. 이 지역은 워낙 광활하기 때문에, 출발 전 가고 싶은 명소를 미리 정해 두는 것이 좋다. 이너 헤브리디스(Inner Hebrides)와 아우터 헤브리디스(Outer Hebrides)의 아름다움만 탐험해도 몇 주는 걸릴 것이다.
그중에서도 스카이섬(Isle of Skye)은 이너 헤브리디스에서 가장 인기 있는 여행지다. 섬의 요정 연못(Fairy Pools)과 2억 8천만 년 전에 형성된 화산암 봉우리 스토르의 노인(Old Man of Storr)이 특히 유명하다. 멀섬(Isle of Mull) 역시 야생 동물을 사랑하는 여행자들에게 인기가 높다. 물개, 수달, 고래, 돌고래, 그리고 다양한 조류가 이 섬과 주변 바다에서 자주 목격된다. 물론, 스코틀랜드의 상징 같은 하이랜드 소와 무스들도 반갑게 맞이해 줄 것이다.
위에 언급한 모든 곳을 다 둘러보려면 차가 있어도 꽤 오래 걸릴 것이다. 따라서 여행 기간에 맞춰 방문할 지역을 미리 정해 두는 것이 좋다. 내 친구 중 한 위스키 애호가는 하이랜드의 47개 증류소를 모두 방문하는 여정을 떠나기도 했다. 그는 증류소를 오가는 길에 아름다운 풍경과 고성을 들렀고, 그 여정은 여름 내내 이어졌다.
만약 시간이 4박 5일 정도라면, 에든버러와 글래스고만 둘러보아도 충분히 매력적이다. 두 도시는 각각 다른 매력을 지닌, 스코틀랜드의 영혼이 담긴 곳이다. 여유가 된다면 세인트 앤드루스(St Andrews)도 추천하고 싶다. 고풍스러운 건축물과 바다 풍경이 어우러진, 스코틀랜드의 품격이 느껴지는 곳이다.

Travel: Scottish Highlands
When people dream of traveling to Europe, they often think of France, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, or Greece. But if you seek somewhere more mysterious and untouched, a place few travelers have ventured, I recommend the Scottish Highlands.
When I was a university student, I spent two weeks backpacking there. It was one of the most breathtaking and rejuvenating trips of my life. I remember gazing up at the ancient rock formations carved by millions of years of erosion and standing in awe at the vast, untamed landscapes stretching beyond the heather-covered hills. It is not an easy journey. The cold air, high altitude, and relentless wind can be daunting. Rain is frequent, so a waterproof jacket, hiking boots, and layers of warm clothing are essential. But for those with a spirit of adventure, the Highlands are irresistible—all the more so for lovers of Scotch whisky.
One of the most renowned areas is Cairngorms National Park, located about an hour and a half from Edinburgh. Here you can find some of Scotland’s highest peaks, Balmoral Castle, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved summer retreat, and one of Scotland’s most charming hotels, The Fife Arms. As the Highlands are the birthplace of Scotch whisky, you’ll find countless bars and distilleries offering tastings. Among them, Bertie’s Bar is particularly famous for its whisky library, where bottles are arranged by flavor profile.
A true Highland road trip should include at least part of the legendary North Coast 500 route. Though remote and winding, it takes travelers past historic landmarks, ancient ruins, whisky distilleries, coastal villages, and some of the most stunning scenery in all of Scotland. If possible, spend a night at Loch Ness Lodge, perched above the lake. You might even catch a glimpse of the mythical Nessie, haha. Along the route lie Victorian-era hotels, grand castles, and natural wonders such as Durness Beach, Smoo Cave, Sango Bay, and Sandwood Bay. Don’t miss Eas a’ Chual Aluinn, Britain’s tallest waterfall.
Whisky enthusiasts will find paradise here, from the Glenmorangie Distillery, known for its elegant single malts, to Old Pulteney on the northeastern coast, where the sea breeze subtly flavors the spirit.
Another rewarding route is along the west coast and its nearby islands. Whatever path you choose, again, be well prepared for unpredictable weather: waterproof gear and layered clothing are a must. Like the North Coast, the region is so vast that it’s best to narrow down your destinations in advance. The Inner and Outer Hebrides alone could fill several weeks of exploration.
Isle of Skye, the most popular of the Inner Hebrides, is famous for its Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Storr, a 180-foot basalt pinnacle formed 280 million years ago. The Isle of Mull enchants nature lovers with its abundant wildlife: seals, otters, whales, dolphins, seabirds, and, of course, the shaggy Highland cows that are symbols of Scotland itself.
To visit all the places mentioned would take months, unless you have a car. It’s best to plan your route carefully according to how much time you have. One of my friends, a devoted whisky enthusiast, once embarked on a journey solely to visit all 47 distilleries in the Highlands. Along the way, he stopped at castles and scenic viewpoints, a trip that filled an entire summer.
If you have only a few days, say four or five, even visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow alone will be worth your while; both cities are rich in character and charm. And if time allows, St Andrews, with its elegant architecture and storied coastline, makes a perfect final stop.
